INTRODUCTION
Hello, I am Zara Suleman
(she/her)
I am grateful and privileged to live, work and gather on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples including the Musqueam (xʷmәθkʷәy̓әm), TsleilWauthuth (Sәl̓ílwәtaʔ/Selilwitulh) and Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw).
I am the founder of Suleman Family Law, where I practice family law and fertility law in British Columbia. I am a certified family law mediator and collaborative law practitioner. I am also a writer, trainer and coach. I have represented clients at Provincial Court, Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal. I have also worked on Supreme Court of Canada interventions. I have had the pleasure of being an adjunct instructor for family law at the University of Victoria, Faculty of Law (Victoria, B.C)
I earned my Master of Laws from the University of Victoria, my Law degree from the University of Ottawa and my Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University. I am currently on the Board of Governors for the Law Foundation of BC. I was also recently the Chair of the BC Law Institute Research Project on the Review of Legal Parentage under the Family Law Act. I also sit on the Advisory Committee for the FREDA Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children.
Prior to law school, I was a front-line community advocate for over a decade. I have been working on issues of violence against women and children for over 30 years. I have been actively involved in presenting, training, writing and editing materials on family law issues, trauma informed practice, gender-based violence, queer, immigrant/refugee and anti-racism/critical race theory. I work from a decolonial and intersectional lens that is survivor-centred.
I am the recipient of the 2018 Equality & Diversity Award from the Canadian Bar Association (BC), and I was designated a King’s Counsel (KC) in 2022.
I have a blog at https://www.thebusinessofbreakups.com ™ and can be found on Instagram @thebusinessofbreakups and @sulemanfamilylaw
